Designing Models with Texture
What if the structure you’re building needs to be touched — not just solved?
What is Tactile Thinking?
Tactile thinking is the ability to feel the form of an idea before you name it.
It’s what sculptors do before they sketch.
It’s what musicians sense in the body before they play.
It’s what modelers do when they intuit that something’s off — not because the math is wrong, but because the structure doesn’t resonate.
It’s not irrational.
It’s pre-verbal precision.
Why It Matters in Modeling
In DAM and DAF, systems aren’t just logical — they’re lived.
To work at the interface is to let models emerge through attention, rhythm, form, friction.
Tactile thinking is a way to design:
- With body intelligence
- Through metaphorical motion
- Inside embodied feedback
You’re not calculating.
You’re shaping.
Characteristics of Tactile Modeling
Trait | Description |

Felt asymmetry | You sense when a model is balanced or strained |
Emergent shape | You let the model unfold — not force it from above |
Inner texture | You notice “coarse” vs “smooth” system transitions |
Local rhythm | You move with segments, not just systems |
Friction as guidance | You use resistance as a modeling compass |
Practice: Modeling Without Equations
Take a concept like “coherence.”
- Draw it by hand. What does coherence feel like visually?
- Move your body. What does it mean to move coherently in a room?
- Describe it in texture. Is it grainy, soft, tense, tight, dissolving?
- Listen. What kind of music feels structurally coherent?
Then ask:
What kind of system has this texture?
That’s tactile modeling.
Application in DAM
- Use friction as a signal for rule adjustment
- Design update rules through flow — not algebra
- Build models that respond to what feels misaligned, not just what is miscalculated
- Allow structure to be sketched, moved, embodied, before formalized

Why Tactile Thinking Isn’t “Less Rigorous”
Because all rigorous thought starts in perception.
Logic is what survives the test of articulation —
but articulation often begins with a shape, a rhythm, a hunch.
Tactile thinking returns us to the root of knowing.
And from there, we can model from the inside out.
